Studies on the nutrition of ROK Army recruits, and the fluctuations in their physical condition, body strength, and body fluid components during the basic trining period

Abstract
A survey was made on the nutritional status of recruits during their training period, designed to test their adaptation to army life, and compare these observations with physical condition, body strength, and blood components, which are thought to be significant in dietetics.
A total of one hundred and seven recruits, in the basic training course, were included in the observations. The measurements performed in each category ~~ere as follows:
1. In food intake amount: total calorie, protein, fat, carbohydrates, salt.
2. In physical condition: height, weight, chest circumference.
3. In body strength: gripping, pulling, grenade throwing.
4. In blood composition: hemoglobin, hematocrit R.B.C. count, serum iron, blood sugar, K+, Na`, Cl- in serum, total protein and electrophoretic pattern of proteins in serum.
The measurements were made as follows:
a. Physical condition and body strength:
(1) On entering the Recruit Training Center.
(2) At the end of the 6th week of training.
b. Blood components:
(1) On entering the recruit Training Center.
(2) At the end of the 3rd week of training.
(3) At the end of the 6th week of training. Following is a summary of the results:
a. Average daily individual ration based on the monthly standard in the army consisted of: total 3, 505 Cal(protein-121.3gm, fat-45.1 gm)
Food intake consisted of: total 3,149 Cal(protein-101.9gm, fat-31.8m)
b. ,average physical, measurements of Recruits an arrival at the training center:
(1) Height-166.23. 1 cm
(2) Weight-57.04.2 kg
(3) Chest circumference-87.83.6 cm
And at the end of the 6th week of basic training:
(1) Weight-58.53.7kg
(2) Chest circumference-87.44.0 cm
Ttie above indicates an average increase of 1.5 kg in weight.
Ttie body strength tests showed the following: (1;) On entering the Training Center: gripping-
38.55.1 kg, pulling-118.37.3 kg, grenade
throw ing-32.65.3 m.
(2) At the end of the 6th week: gripping-38.45.3 kg, pulling-119.27.0 kg, grenade throwing-35.55.7m.
These measurements indicate a little improvement in grenade throwing.
c. (1) On entering the Training Center: hemoglobin-14.46-0.84 gm o, hematocrit-43.36=2. 14 %, R. B. C. count-458.9927. 37(10, 000/~nm3).
(2) At the end of the 3rd week: (~Iid-way of training) hemoglobin-14. 23 = 0.94 gm%, Hematocrit-43.03--2.51 %, R. B. C. count-450.7127.66(10, 000/mnc3).
(3) A the ends of the 6th week: (completion of training) hemoglobin-13.41 ~ 1.01 gm%, hematocrit-41.092.64 %, R. B. C. count 427.3829.85(10, 000/~nmc3).
The: above measurements show a considerable

decrease at the end of the 6th ~,veek:
d. Serum iron: on entering the Training Center 118.811.3 /~%, at the end of the 3rd week 123.210.6 u%, at the end of the 6th week-117.212.5 ~%.
This shows a little increase in the midway,
and decrease again towards the end of the trai-
ning period but not significantly different.
e. Blood sugar: on entering the Training Center-93.3410.30 mg%, at the end of the 3rd week-92.98+8.26 mg%, at the end of the 6th week-90.73_10.5 mg%.
This show s a slight trend of decrease, but no significantly different.
f. Serum K+, Na+, and Cl- don¢¥t show any fluctuation during the training period. Measurements on entering the Training Center were: KT-5.040.37 mEq/L, Nat-140, 783. 75 mEq/L, C1--103.971.65 mEq/L.
At the end of the 3rd week: K¢¥-4.970.37 m -Eq/L, Na+140.994.06 mEq/L, Cl¢¥-103.431,82 mEq/L.
At the end of the 6th week: k+-5.08=0.32 m Eq/L,Na+-140.32-=3.60 mEq/L, C1--103.251. 77 mEq/L.
g. Total serum protein: on entering the Training Center: 7.100.54 gm%, at the end of the 3rd week: 7. 100.46 gm%, at the end of the 6th week: 7,11+0.64 gm%, as is shown, there is very little variation, however, the A/G ratio gradually increases: 1.170.15, 1.290.21, 1.310.21, that is, albumin shown as an increase 54.053.24 %, 56, 474.57 %, 57.513.95 %, ,3-Globulin shows a decrease: 11.481.77 %, 11.012, 00 %, 10, 40 -L 1.5 %, r-Globulin also shored a decrease as 21.47 2.67 %, 19, 44=3.09 %, 19.132.86 %. No significant fluctuation occurred in the ai-Globulin as: al-Globulin-4.590.74 %, 4.38 0.92%, 4.700.74 %, a~-Globulin 8, 721. 27 %, 8, 54---2.07 %, 8, 211.68 %.
